Do you want to participate in an unconventional football match in an unusual landscape? Maider López, SKOR (Stichting Kunst en Openbare Ruimte) and Witte de With are delighted to invite football and art lovers to participate in the first and only Polder Cup, either as players or spectators. In the traditional Dutch landscape of pastureland and ditches near Ottoland, football will be given a whole new set of rules.
Maider López
Polder Cup is a sports and arts event, organized by Maider López (Spain, 1976). López has established an international reputation with her original, unusual projects in public space. For example in 2005, assisted by hundreds of volunteer car drivers, López created an artificial traffic jam in the remote Aralar mountains in Spain’s Basque Country. For the occasion of the opening of the new Centre Pompidou in Metz, France on May 15th, 2010, López recently provided the visitors with 3000 lit umbrellas. The participants formed chains of umbrellas, sat, telephoned and talked under their umbrellas, together they formed an extension of the
Centre Pompidou-Metz, illuminating and rejoicing the public arena.
New rules on September 4th, 2010
With Polder Cup, López will be playfully combining the Dutch love of football, water and consensus culture. In the polders near Ottoland in the Province of South Holland, she will paint football pitches on the surrounding pastureland. Ditches will cut right across the pitches forcing players to come up with new rules and new tactics. The Polder Cup is set to rejuvenate international footballing language. As López explained, "The rules of football are in part determined by the shape of the pitch. If you change that shape, the rules are automatically changed along with the game of football as we know it. It will become a new game. The players will have to come up with new tactics, thereby reinventing the sport of football."
Players and spectators
Anyone can join the Polder Cup, as either player or spectator, individually or in groups
completely free of charge. You may choose to participate as a group of friends, or as an existing football team.
For all participants there will be free food and drink, a T-shirt and a souvenir in the form of a Polder Cup photograph, personally signed by Maider López. The actual football matches will be played throughout the day, according to the players’ own discretion, and subject to limited rules.
Opening and kick off on June 3rd, 2010
A huge banner with an aerial photograph of the tournament site will be suspended on the façade of the Witte de With, Witte de Withstraat 50, Rotterdam starting on 3 June. On that day, there will be drinks and a presentation of the Polder Cup attended by Maider López herself and Fulya Erdemçi, director of SKOR, between 6 and 8 p.m.
Polder Cup has been a great success, congratulations to the Polderboys! We would like to thank all participants, volunteers and supporters for a wonderful day. Take a look at some impressions HERE

Between You and I
Polder Cup is curated by SKOR (Foundation Art and Public Space) and Witte de With, centre for contemporary art.
Polder Cup is part of 'Between You and I',
a joint project between SKOR and Witte de With (Centre for Contemporary Art Rotterdam), organized between the Autumn of 2009 and Summer of 2010. Four international artists were invited to submit a proposal for an intervention on the outer façade of the Witte de With in the form of a critical interface to the urban environment of the city of Rotterdam. As part of Morality, a series of thematic projects presented in Witte de With starting in October 2009, these interventions aim to reproduce and redefine the boundaries between the institute and the public domain. Between You and I strives to open up a space in which to reflect on the contemporary meaning of morality, and which invites the public to actively contribute ideas on the presence of contemporary art in public space.
